It arrived in France in 2004 where it spread rapidly. As a highly effective predator of insects, including honey bees and other beneficial species, it can cause significant losses to bee colonies, and potentially other native species.<\/p>\n<p>The National Bee Unit confirmed a sighting of the Asian hornet in the Tetbury area of Gloucestershire in September 2016 &#8211; the first time the hornet was discovered in the UK. The places it is most likely to be found are in southern parts of England or goods among which it could be accidentally imported [such as soil with imported pot plants, cut flowers, fruit and timber]. It is inactive over the winter.<\/p>\n<p>RBKA will post news on occurrence and distribution in the UK as and when it is received. One of our members was\u00a0actively involved in the recent\u00a0reporting from Tetbury and the latest news will be available here!<\/p>\n<p>What to look out for&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Vespa velutina<\/em> queens are up to 3 cm in length; workers up to 25 mm [slightly <strong>smaller<\/strong> than the native European hornet <em>Vespa crabro<\/em>]<\/li>\n<li>Entirely dark brown or black velvety body, bordered with a fine yellow band<\/li>\n<li>Only one band on the abdomen: 4th abdominal segment almost entirely yellow\/orange<\/li>\n<li>Legs brown with yellow ends<\/li>\n<li>Head black with an orange-yellow face<\/li>\n<li><em>Vespa velutina<\/em> is a day flying species which, unlike the European hornet [<em>Vespa crabro<\/em>], ceases activity at dusk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are some excellent publications prepared by the <strong>Non-Native Species Secretariat<\/strong> [NNSS] and available on their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nonnativespecies.org\/\/alerts\/index.cfm?id=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Poster showing key features\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ryedalebees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Alert_poster_Vespa_velutina_v1.5.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NNSS Asian Hornet Poster<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Identification Sheet \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ryedalebees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/ID_Vespa_velutina_Asian_Hornet_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NNSS Asian Hornet Identification Sheet<\/a><\/li>\n<li>General Information Sheet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ryedalebees.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Hymettus_-_Asian_Hornet_Information_Sheet_12_-_Sept_2010.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NNSS Asian Hornet Information Sheet<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span> App for iOS and Android systems <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">An App for your mobile to identify and report the Yellow Legged Asian hornet is available. It has been developed by, and for, the Department for Environment, Food &amp; Rural Affairs [DEFRA]. It is designed to be easy to use and allows fast reporting of possible Asian hornet sightings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The interactive app, developed by the <em>Great Britain Non-native Species Secretariat<\/em> and the <em>Centre for Ecology and Hydrology<\/em>, will also make it easier for people to judge whether an insect may actually be an Asian hornet; with pictures available of other insects that it could be confused with and helpful information about their size, appearance and the times of year they are most likely to be spotted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The <strong><em>Asian Hornet Watch\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>app is available to download from the <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/gb\/app\/asian-hornet-watch\/id1161238813\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=uk.ac.ceh.hornets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Android<\/a> app stores.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>What you can do about it&#8230;<\/h1>\n<p>Trapping is an option and the <em>National Bee Unit <\/em>has produced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalbeeunit.com\/assets\/PDFs\/3_Resources_for_beekeepers\/Fact_Sheets\/Fact_01_Asian_Hornet_Monitoring.pdf\">a fact sheet<\/a> that outlines the process for monitoring the yellow-legged hornet activity, whilst minimising the impact on native invertebrates, and for reporting suspected yellow-legged hornets.<\/p>\n<p>If you suspect you have caught an Asian hornet then use the Asian Hornet Watch App on your mobile phone or send details, with a photograph and location information, by email to: \u00a0<a href=\"mailto:alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk\">alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk<\/a>\u00a0or you may submit details online through this link &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brc.ac.uk\/risc\/alert.php?species=asian_hornet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hornet Sighting<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Do <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">NOT<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0under <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">ANY CIRCUMSTANCES<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0disturb or provoke an active hornets\u2019 nest [as if you need telling!!].<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: black; font-family: Oswald, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 27px;\">Interesting videos&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Please note that at the end of these videos, <em>YouTube<\/em> will follow-up with the next related video which may not be about <em>Vespa velutina<\/em>!
